Abstract
As the green building movement becomes more popular, building occupants expect green buildings to meet their perceptions in regard to health, affordability, and environmental impact. The current marketing and green building industry lack research on the impact of culture and education on the value placed on green building attributes. This study presents the results of survey of 112 South Korean and American university students, in an effort to quantify the importance of the common categories from leading green building certification systems used in the U.S. and South Korea. The perceptions of the two rating systems’ categories are calculated through the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Results of this study show differences and similarities in green building perceptions based on gender, culture, and educational background among “Materials and Resources”, “Indoor Environmental Quality”, and “Energy and Atmosphere” categories.
