Abstract
Voltaire’s novella, Candide uses realism, symbolism, and imagery to create vivid connections to real world socioeconomic problems of eighteen-century France, and continue to appear to this day. Voltaire in Candide suggests the traditional Romantic depiction of city and country is a mask to hide the corruption of the Christian faith.
