Abstract
In literature, often depictions of women focus on their identity as related to their mental state, rather than looking at the women as whole beings. In this thesis, the main analysis will construct a method to oppose the stigmas and inaccurate portrayals that lead to harmful stereotyping of women not only in literature but society as well. Through the use of a novel and a short story, as well as cinematic texts, the author of this thesis will analyze the representation of women who are labeled with psychosis, hysteria, or other mental health illnesses. The overarching frame uses psychosis as a lens for interpretation.
