Abstract
The 2011 film Drive directed by Nicolas Winding Refn features a protagonist who is given no name, except "Driver." The film sympathetically depicts Driver despite the fact that he commits brutal murders. This troubling fact brings up the question of what kind of hero Driver might be, if indeed he is one. This thesis analyzes elements of a modern hero, a western hero and 20th century antihero that are evident in Driver’s character in order to define what kind of hero can exist in modern society, where justice and violence are typically seen as incompatible.
