Abstract
Perhaps the most prominent flaw in Jungian criticism of J.R.R.Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (1955) is the gross neglect of Merry and Pippin in the discussion of the theory of individuation in the novel. This thesis examines the importance of including Merry and Pippin in the criticism, as they provide essential substantive evidence towards the presence of full, complete and comprehensive relevance of individuation in the development of the characters in The Lord of the Rings.
