Abstract

This thesis argues that through the use of the literary devices; imagery, symbolism, and juxtaposition, Candide exposes the corrupt, harsh, broken world of 18th-century Europe and promotes the new ideals of the Enlightenment. The devices are classically implemented and used in powerful collaborations to strengthen the arguments, exposures, and proposals presented in the work.
