Abstract
Follow the turn-of-the-20th-century saga that describes the trials of a proud, young immigrant who suffers rejection from her Austrian family and who advances from scullery maid to a valued housekeeper. Rising from the back stairs of mansions in Milwaukee, St. Louis, Chicago, to a penthouse on Park Avenue, Josie endures as an unwed mother, but then takes action to reunite with her son and then must decide whether to forgive the father of her child. Although much in the vein of Downton Abbey, Josephine's story is based upon the events of my grandmother's life in German-American culture during 1906-1926.
