Abstract
This chapter explores research on using Lectio Divina as a pedagogical innovation and how it can be used to promote greater awareness and understanding of Global Citizenship Education (GCE). Why is GCE so vital in K-16 education? In part, because we live in an interconnected and interdependent world, and students and teachers need to be prepared to thrive amid global challenges. GCE is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) response to global challenges. According to UNESCO, “Global Citizenship Education aims to empower learners of all ages to assume active roles, both locally and globally, in building more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive and secure societies”. By integrating key components of GCE into the curriculum, students are equipped to thrive in our global world by developing core competencies of intercultural fluency, empathy, and civic participation. As a result, we create more fully engaged and compassionate communities. Lectio Divina is employed as a pedagogical tool and as a qualitative research methodology for this work. Findings and implications are from interventions with pre-and in-service teachers in graduate education courses, where students participated in activities to promote awareness and understanding of Global Citizenship Education (GCE).
